Urbana 2000 Student Conference

The Urbana student mission conference was overflowing with 19,000 students and hundreds of missionaries and volunteers. The conference was held from Dec 27 to Jan 1. The weather was very cold ranging from 0 deg to 10 deg F with lots of snow on the ground. For Mary Rose and Robert from Africa it was their first time to see snow up close. Conference has a definite international flavor. The worship team consisted of Latino, Canadian French, Afro-American and some Americans. Praise songs were in English, French, Chinese, Haitian and Spanish. Over 30% of the students were Asian. Every morning Chinese Pastor Fong from Los Angeles church presented the main messages. The morning and evening large group meeting consisted of messages, drama, testimonies and bible teaching. Two testimonies stood out to me. One was a missionary to Ecuador. Someone stealing their car killed her husband. She continues on with her three children as a missionary in Latin America. The other testimony is a woman from Malaysia. She shared how the witness of four Christians changed her life. Since she has become a Christian her Muslim father has not talked to her for 20 years.
